Never install final fix pipework for cast iron radiators without confirmed measurements. Accurate pipe centre measurements can be provided prior to delivery on request.
Measure radiator length, add 2 x 1.75” for hydronic valves from end of bushes. A larger hole, which will be covered by the valve base plate, can be used to allow for some degree of adjustability.
If you already have your radiators you won’t need this information. Simply use the radiators as guides.
In a normal installation the radiator should be stood as close to the skirting board as possible. It is even possible for the back of the radiator feet to touch the skirting board.
When a radiator is positioned below a window, closing curtains behind rather than in front of it makes it much more efficient. With a floor standing radiator this is possible if you move the pipe centres further away from the wall. If your curtains are floor length, remember to only use one wall stay so the curtains can fully close. Radiators below windows are almost always low enough that one wall stay is enough, however be sure to follow the safety guidelines in our wall stay guide.
Failure to install a filter may reduce the life of your boiler.
Cast iron radiators contain mixed particles which are an unavoidable result of the casting process. While we remove most of the debris, some will always remain in any cast iron radiator. We recommend installing a combined magnetic and physical filter such as the Sentinel Eliminator.
Install thermostatic valves on the flow side.
Castrads thermostatic radiator valves are designed to be installed on the flow or inlet side of the radiator, and the lockshield on the return. If you are unsure which is the flow side, turn the heating on from cold. The pipe that warms first is the flow or inlet side.
Castrads radiators may be installed in three ways, as illustrated above. BBOE is the usual method in the UK. TBSE installation may result in cold spots, particularly in radiators more than one metre long.
