    Reasons to Restore

    Preserve a piece of history

By choosing to refurbish, you are maintaining a really impressive piece of engineering. The evolution of central heating and radiators weaves together the social and industrial histories of Britain, Europe and America. Our craftsmen will allow you to cherish your own little piece of this story.

    Environmental benefits

Peer-reviewed work we have done with Salford university shows that refurbished cast iron radiators have a carbon footprint 95% lower than that of a new one.

Iron is one of the world’s most recycled metals. Cast iron radiators are made from scrap; and at the end of their very long lives will themselves be re-melted once again to form something new. This means that the antique metal you are refurbishing could have an even longer history than you think.

    In expert hands

With our roots in architectural salvage, our experience in reconditioning original radiators goes way back – it’s where Castrads started.

Our founder, Chris Baylis, played a role in the revival of reclaimed cast iron radiators in the late nineties. By the early noughties, interest was increasing from abroad. This has come full circle for us, as we are now expanding our refurbishment service to the US and Europe.

    How we do it

First: removal. Cast iron radiators are heavy. We offer a two-man collection service within and around New York City – our team lift your radiators from their position within your home and transport them carefully back to our HQ in Brooklyn.

The radiator is then carefully inspected, and we will consult about any issues we find. Our clients are only billed for the work that is done.

Steam Systems: If needed we will replace the existing bushings, including adding a vacuum breaker on steam radiators to allow for thermostatic control. Along with our refurbishment service, we have introduced our exclusive steam TRV which provides local temperature control without compromising on style.

Hydronic Systems: Old hot-water systems needed large pipes because they relied on gravity and buoyancy for the distribution of the hot water through the network of radiators. Modern boilers have circulating pumps, so much smaller pipework can be used. We can fit new parts, with your permission, to accommodate whatever system you may have.

Next, we shot blast the radiator to remove the old paint, taking them back to bare metal. We then powder coat radiators in any RAL or Prismatic finish.

Transformation complete, the radiators are then packaged and delivered, with a warranty of ten years on our work. You can read more about the terms and conditions here.

    Why we do it

In 1924 the world leaders in incandescent light bulbs decided to make their product obsolete faster than ever before; generating higher profits. The opposite happens in our industry. The American Radiator Company was one of the largest manufacturers the world has seen. Designed to be completely repairable and restorable, you bought their product only once. By the 1970s, their client base had dwindled.

What is best for business is not best business. A product that lasts more than a lifetime will eventually run out of customers. It may seem counterintuitive, but we’re championing the ‘buy once’ philosophy.

Cast iron radiators last not decades but centuries.

Revive yours for the next one.”
